Oxygenating plants are fast-growing and will help keep a pond healthy and algae free. As plants grow underwater they absorb nutrients through their leaves and release oxygen. Oxygenating plants will release more oxygen than they use, so a fast-growing oxygenating plant will release more oxygen through photosynthesis then it uses up during respiration, hence being given the name oxygenating plant.
Oxygenating plants help condition the water, by absorbing nutrients such as ammonia, nitrates and nitrites as well as other minerals and salts. If these are allowed to build up, they would unbalance the pond and become toxic to the fish and other aquatic life.
How do I know if my pond needs oxygen?
One of the most common signs of low oxygen is fish gasping at the surface of the pond and around any entry points of water. It may look like the fish are hungry. This should be a cause for concern and it requires urgent attention.
