Pholidichthys leucotaenia
Description
Not actually a goby but a convict blenny, sold as a small striped juvenile that shoals in the open. It becomes a large, banded, tunnel-digging adult.
Feeding
Carnivorous. Frozen mysis, chopped prawn and marine pellets. Feeds readily.
Compatibility
Peaceful toward fish too large to eat, and will take small fish and shrimp as it grows. Constant burrowing can undermine rockwork.
Behaviour and personality
Juveniles are black with a white stripe and shoal in the open, mimicking catfish. Adults become banded, larger and largely nocturnal, tunnelling extensively beneath the rockwork.
Before you buy
Two things surprise people: it reaches around 30 cm, and it excavates constantly. Rockwork must sit on the tank base rather than on sand, or the tunnelling will collapse it.
