Live Aquatic Plants Need Nutrients

Live Aquatic Plants Need Nutrients

Few people are aware that CO2 is the most important nutrient for aquatic plants. Light, water and CO2 are decisive elements in the growth process of all plants, also known as the photosynthesis. Our CO2 systems can be found by clicking here.

Bottom Layer for the Aquarium

When you establish an aquarium, you need a bottom layer that allows the roots of the plants to develop. There are many different gravels available, but having a layer of stones is simply not enough. Gravel only anchors the plants to the ground.

If you want your plants to grow and thrive, you need a substrate or soil product that will help make the nutrients available to the roots and plants. You can browse our range of aquarium soil by clicking here.

Plant growth substrate ensures healthy and long-term growth in the aquarium. Substrate must be covered with a thick layer of gravel. Aquarium soil softens the water, reducing pH and KH.

Plant Nutrition

In fish tanks with few plants and many fish, the fish will release sufficient quantities of macronutrients. In this case, there is no need to add macronutrients. However if conditions are reversed, there are many supplements available for aquarium plants. Liquid fertilisers often contain iron, manganese and all vital micro-nutrients for your plants for example.

Other supplements include nutrition capsules, designed for root nutrition, which you place in the bottom substrate layer, near the roots of the plants. These often contain nitrogen, phosphor, iron and micronutrients which are slowly released as the plants need them.

Recommended Tools

There are a selection of plant maintenance tools available on the market.
