Mormyrus longirostris
Description
An elephantnose relative with a long downturned snout, navigating by a weak electrical field rather than sight. Genuinely unusual, and a substantial fish at maturity.
Feeding
Carnivorous and a slow, deliberate feeder. Frozen bloodworm, blackworm and chopped prawn, fed after lights out. Will not compete with fast tankmates.
Compatibility
Peaceful but territorial toward its own kind and other electrical fish, whose fields interfere with its own. Keep one per tank. Tankmates must be calm and too large to eat.
Behaviour and personality
Cruises slowly, constantly scanning the substrate with the snout. Most active at night. Uses electrical pulses to navigate and communicate.
Before you buy
Reaches around 45 cm and needs a very large tank with soft sand, dim lighting and heavy cover. It will not compete for food, so target-feeding after dark is essential. A demanding, long-lived specialist fish.
