FeedingCarnivorous and easy to feed. Accepts:
- Bloodworms
- Earthworms
- Insect larvae
- Sinking amphibian or carnivore pellets
- Small strips of fish or prawn
A varied, protein-rich diet is recommended for best health and colour.
Tank MatesBest kept in a species-only setup. If tank mates are desired, use only peaceful, cool-water fish that won’t nip at their gills or limbs, such as:
- White Cloud Mountain Minnows
- Variants of cold-tolerant, small fish
Avoid:
- Any warm-water species
- Fin-nippers
- Large fish that may see newts as food
- Crayfish or aggressive invertebrates
Generally peaceful. May eat very small fish or shrimp if given the chance. Prefer calm, low-stress environments.
Experience LevelBeginner to intermediate. Extremely hardy compared to other amphibians, but requires cool, clean, well-oxygenated water and a secure lid.
