Description
The Apistogramma elizabethae, often referred to as Elizabeth’s Dwarf Cichlid, is a vibrant and highly sought-after species in the aquarium hobby. Known for its striking red and blue coloration and elegant fin extensions, this small, South American cichlid brings an exotic flair to freshwater tanks. It typically grows to about 2.5 to 3 inches, making it ideal for smaller, well-planted aquariums.
Origin:
This species is native to the Rio Negro basin in the Amazon, Brazil, where it thrives in slow-moving, soft, and tannin-stained waters.
Feeding:
Apistogramma elizabethae are omnivorous but prefer a diet rich in protein. Offer them a varied diet of high-quality flake food, live, or frozen foods such as bloodworms, daphnia, and brine shrimp.
Tank Mates:
Due to their relatively peaceful nature, they can be kept with other small, non-aggressive species. Ideal tank mates include tetras, Corydoras, and other small peaceful fish. Avoid larger or aggressive species.
Aggression:
While generally peaceful, males can become territorial, especially during breeding. It’s advisable to house them in pairs or harems (one male with multiple females) and provide plenty of hiding spaces.
Experience Level:
Intermediate. These fish require stable water conditions and specific parameters to thrive, making them more suitable for aquarists with some experience in maintaining delicate species.
Water Parameters:
Temperature: 72-82°F (22-28°C)
pH: 5.0-6.5
Hardness: 1-5 dGH
Water Type: Soft, slightly acidic
