Description

Araguaia Cory (Corydoras araguaiaensis)
Overview

The Araguaia Cory is a peaceful and visually striking Corydoras species, featuring a silvery body with a subtle dark lateral stripe and elegant fins. Active, social, and hardy, it makes an excellent addition to community aquariums and planted setups.

Origin

Native to the Araguaia River basin in Brazil, inhabiting slow-moving waters with sandy or fine gravel substrates and abundant leaf litter or vegetation.

Feeding

Omnivorous and easy to feed:

  • Sinking Cory pellets and wafers
  • Frozen foods such as bloodworms, brine shrimp, and daphnia
  • Occasional live foods for conditioning
  • High-quality micro sinking pellets

Tip: Provide sinking foods, as Corydoras primarily forage at the bottom.

Tank Mates

Ideal for peaceful community tanks:

  • Small tetras, rasboras, and pencilfish
  • Rainbowfish and small livebearers
  • Dwarf cichlids (e.g., Apistogramma, Rams)
  • Other Corydoras
  • Peaceful loaches

Avoid: Aggressive or large fish that may stress or outcompete them.

Aggression

Very low. Corydoras are schooling fish and should be kept in groups of 6 or more to encourage natural behavior and reduce stress.

Experience Level

Beginner to Intermediate. Hardy and adaptable, provided they have clean water and a soft substrate for foraging.

Water Parameters
  • Temperature: 72–79°F (22–26°C)
  • pH: 6.0–7.5
  • Hardness: 2–12 dGH
  • Notes: Provide a fine sand substrate, driftwood, plants, and shaded areas to mimic natural conditions.

The Araguaia Cory (Corydoras araguaiaensis) is a peaceful, attractive, and active bottom-dweller, perfect for community aquariums and Corydoras enthusiasts seeking a hardy, schooling species.
