Care guide at a glance
Poecilia latipinna
Description
A short-bodied molly form in assorted colours, bred for a rounded balloon profile. Distinctive, popular, and with some specific care needs that the standard molly does not have.
Feeding
Omnivorous with a vegetable requirement. Spirulina flake, algae wafers and blanched vegetables. Feed small amounts more often rather than large meals.
Compatibility
Peaceful but slow-moving. Keep with calm tankmates that will not outcompete them for food or nip at them. Keep more females than males.
Behaviour and personality
Slower and less agile than a standard molly, with a distinctive upright swimming posture.
Before you buy
The balloon shape comes from a shortened spine, which compresses the internal organs. These fish are more prone to swim bladder and digestive problems than standard mollies, and generally shorter-lived. Feed small portions frequently, keep the water hard and alkaline, and avoid fast or boisterous tankmates.
