Chaetodon aureofasciatus
Description
A golden-yellow butterflyfish with fine diagonal lines and a dark eye band, endemic to Australian waters. Attractive, and a coral polyp feeder.
Feeding
Feeds primarily on coral polyps in the wild. Must be weaned onto frozen mysis, clam, blackworm and sponge-based preparations, several times daily. Many specimens never adapt.
Compatibility
Peaceful toward fish. Not reef safe - it eats coral polyps, which is the central problem.
Behaviour and personality
Picks constantly at rock and coral surfaces. Often kept in pairs.
Before you buy
A coral-eating specialist, so it cannot go in a reef and is difficult to feed in a fish-only tank. Success needs a mature system with live rock and real patience.
