Description

Australian Northern Spangled Gudgeon (Ophiocara porocephala)
Overview

The Northern Spangled Gudgeon is a striking, heavy-bodied sleeper goby known for its mottled “spangled” patterning and calm, deliberate behaviour. Impressive in size and presence, it makes a bold feature fish for larger freshwater or low-end brackish aquariums.

Origin

Native to northern Australia, New Guinea, and surrounding regions. Found in freshwater rivers, creeks, and estuaries, often over sandy or muddy bottoms with submerged roots or rocks.

Feeding

Carnivorous and easy to feed. Enjoys sinking carnivore pellets, frozen foods (prawn, bloodworm, mysis), and the occasional live food treat. Provide a protein-rich, varied diet.

Tank Mates

Best suited to peaceful or moderately sized tank mates. Can be kept with rainbowfish, larger tetras, peaceful cichlids, monos/scats (if brackish), and other robust fish. Small fish or shrimp may be viewed as prey.

Aggression

Generally peaceful but territorial toward conspecifics or similar-shaped bottom dwellers. Keep singly unless housed in a very large tank with ample hiding areas.

Experience Level

Intermediate. Hardy once established but appreciates clean water, stable conditions, and a spacious environment.

Water Parameters
  • Temperature: 72°F – 82°F (22°C – 28°C)

  • Hardness: 8 – 20 dGH
  • Salinity: Freshwater to light brackish (up to ~1.005 SG), depending on collection origin
  • Notes: Provide sand or fine gravel, driftwood, caves, and shaded areas.

Robust, calm, and visually impressive, the Northern Spangled Gudgeon is an excellent centrepiece fish for larger freshwater or lightly brackish aquariums.
