Description
Overview:
The Bandit Butterfly Fish is a visually striking species with a pale silvery-white body, bold black “bandit mask” across its eyes, and subtle yellow accents on the fins. Its graceful swimming and unique coloration make it a standout addition to large marine aquariums.
Origin:
Native to the Western Indian Ocean, including the coasts of East Africa, Madagascar, and the nearby islands.
Feeding:
Omnivorous – feeds on coral polyps, small invertebrates, algae, and plankton in the wild. In captivity, it readily accepts frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine flakes or pellets.
Tank Mates:
Best kept with peaceful community fish. Not reef safe due to its coral-feeding habits.
Aggression:
Generally peaceful, though may show mild territoriality toward other butterflyfish.
Experience Level:
Recommended for intermediate aquarists, as it requires a stable environment and varied diet.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C)
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Salinity: 1.020–1.025
- Minimum Tank Size: 100+ gallons
The Bandit Butterfly Fish is an elegant and eye-catching species, ideal for aquarists looking to add a classic yet distinctive butterflyfish to a fish-only marine aquarium.
