Care guide at a glance
Scleromystax barbatus
Description
A large, boldly marked relative of the corydoras, the males growing facial bristles and a striking contrast pattern. Handsome, characterful and often kept too warm.
Feeding
Sinking pellets, wafers and frozen foods. Food must reach the bottom in quantity - they will not thrive on what other fish leave behind.
Compatibility
Peaceful toward other species, though males are territorial with one another and need floor space. Keep in a group with room to spread out.
Behaviour and personality
Larger and more assertive than a true cory. Mature males develop bristles along the snout and a dramatic gold-and-black pattern.
Before you buy
This is a subtropical fish from cooler coastal streams. Kept at standard tropical temperatures it is short-lived. Give it cool, well-oxygenated water and soft sand.
