Genicanthus bellus
Description
A swallowtail angel with dramatic sexual difference - males striped in orange and blue, females black and white with a lyre tail. One of the few genuinely reef-safe angelfish.
Feeding
Planktivore rather than a grazer, which is what makes it reef safe. Frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp and fine marine pellets, three times daily.
Compatibility
Reef safe - it feeds from the water column and leaves corals alone. Peaceful. Can be kept as a male with several females.
Behaviour and personality
Swims constantly in open water rather than picking at rock. Females can change sex to male if no male is present.
Before you buy
The reef-safe angelfish, and the reason to pay the premium. Collected from deeper water, so subdued lighting suits it. Needs frequent feeding like other planktivores.
