Hyphessobrycon megalopterus
Description
A smoky grey body marked with a bold black shoulder patch ringed in silver, and tall sail-like fins on the males. Peaceful with each other in all but display, and excellent value in a planted tank.
Feeding
Flake, micro-pellets and frozen daphnia, bloodworm and brine shrimp.
Compatibility
Peaceful community fish. Keep in groups of eight or more with a mix of sexes so the males have each other to display to.
Behaviour and personality
Males flare their large fins at one another constantly in mock combat, spreading everything and circling. It looks alarming and is entirely harmless.
Before you buy
Buy a mixed group rather than all males or all females; the display behaviour that makes the fish worth keeping only happens with both present.
