Overview
The Bleeding Heart Wrasse is a stunning and active reef fish, instantly recognizable by the vivid red patch on its side—resembling a “bleeding heart”—set against a shimmering green and yellow body. Hardy, colorful, and constantly on the move, this wrasse adds both beauty and functionality to the aquarium by helping control small invertebrate pests.
OriginNative to the Indo-Pacific region, including Indonesia, the Philippines, and the Great Barrier Reef, Halichoeres margaritaceus inhabits coral reefs and sandy lagoons where it forages among rocks and coral rubble.
FeedingAn omnivore that thrives on a varied diet of frozen mysis, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and high-quality marine pellets. It will also graze naturally on small invertebrates in the aquarium. Feed 2–3 times daily.
Tank MatesPeaceful and reef-safe with most community species. Ideal companions include tangs, gobies, anthias, and fairy wrasses. Avoid aggressive fish that may intimidate this active but gentle species.
AggressionGenerally peaceful, though mild territorial behavior may occur toward other wrasses in smaller systems. Provide ample swimming space, live rock for foraging, and a sand bed for burrowing at night.
Experience LevelBest suited for beginner to intermediate aquarists. Hardy and easy to acclimate when provided a mature, stable environment with plenty of hiding spaces.
