Xiphophorus maculatus
Description
A moon platy in soft metallic blue with extended butterfly-patterned fins. Slightly more delicate finnage than a standard platy, but the same undemanding fish underneath.
Feeding
Omnivorous with a genuine vegetable requirement. Quality flake with spirulina, algae wafers and frozen daphnia or brine shrimp.
Compatibility
Peaceful, sturdy and one of the best community livebearers. Keep more females than males. Mixes well with most calm community fish.
Behaviour and personality
Busy, bold and always in view, grazing surfaces and feeding readily at all levels.
Before you buy
Prefers harder, alkaline water. Breeds readily in mixed-sex groups and the fry are large enough to survive in a planted tank, so numbers climb quickly.
