Valenciennea strigata
Description
A pale sand-sifting goby with a bright yellow head and an electric blue cheek stripe. Industrious, peaceful and a genuine working part of a sand-bed system.
Feeding
Sifts sand for small invertebrates. Must also be fed directly - frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp and sinking pellets, two or three times daily.
Compatibility
Peaceful and reef safe. Keep singly or as a bonded pair. Constant sand-sifting will dust low-lying corals, which some keepers find a nuisance.
Behaviour and personality
Takes mouthfuls of sand, sifts out the edible content and expels the rest through the gills. Works methodically across the tank all day.
Before you buy
The classic failure is assuming it feeds itself from the sand. In most home tanks the sand fauna runs out within weeks and the fish slowly starves, so direct feeding is essential. Needs a deep fine sand bed and a sealed lid, as they jump.
