Symphysodon discus
Description
The classic disc-shaped Amazonian cichlid in blue striated patterning. Magnificent, temperamental, and the fish most often bought before the keeper is ready for it.
Feeding
Frozen bloodworm, beefheart preparations, quality discus granules and brine shrimp. Feed several times daily, particularly when growing.
Compatibility
Peaceful but easily stressed and easily outcompeted. Keep in a group of five or more. Suitable tankmates are few - calm tetras such as rummynose, and corydoras. Avoid anything fast or boisterous.
Behaviour and personality
Slow, deliberate and highly aware of the room. Forms a clear social hierarchy within the group.
Before you buy
Discus need consistently warm, soft, immaculate water and frequent large water changes. The high temperature rules out many common tankmates. This is a fish to keep after a few years of experience, not as a first cichlid.
