Periophthalmus papilio
Description
An amphibious fish that spends much of its life out of the water, propped on muscular pectoral fins with independently swivelling eyes. Utterly unlike anything else sold as an aquarium fish.
Feeding
Carnivorous. Live and frozen bloodworm, crickets, mealworms and small prawn, offered on land or at the water's edge.
Compatibility
Territorial with its own kind unless the land area is large. Cannot be housed with normal aquarium fish, as the setup suits neither.
Behaviour and personality
Spends most of its time out of the water on land or mud, returning to wet its skin and gills. Skips and jumps across surfaces.
Before you buy
This is not an aquarium fish. It needs a paludarium with a large land area, brackish water, high humidity, a tight lid and a heat source above the land. Sold into a standard aquarium it will drown or dry out. Please make sure buyers understand the setup before purchase.
