Care guide at a glance
Opistognathus rosenblatti
Description
A burrowing jawfish in mottled brown covered with electric blue spots, hovering vertically above a burrow it builds itself. One of the most engaging marine fish available.
Feeding
Carnivorous. Frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp and fine marine pellets, two or three times daily.
Compatibility
Reef safe and peaceful. Territorial with other jawfish unless the tank is large. Cannot be kept with aggressive fish.
Behaviour and personality
Builds and constantly maintains a burrow lined with rubble, hovering vertically above it and retreating tail-first at speed.
Before you buy
Two essentials: a deep bed of mixed sand and small rubble at least 10 cm deep to burrow in, and a completely sealed lid, as jawfish jump readily. This species also prefers cooler water than most tropical marines.
