Care guide at a glance
Taeniura lymma
Description
A small ray in tan with brilliant blue spots and blue-striped tail. Beautiful, and one of the most frequently lost animals in the marine trade.
Feeding
Carnivorous, feeding on buried invertebrates. Requires live or fresh prawn, clam, mussel and cockle, often hand-fed initially. Many specimens refuse food entirely and starve.
Compatibility
Not reef safe. Cannot be kept with aggressive fish, which will harass it, or with rockwork it might trap itself beneath. Needs a deep fine sand bed and open floor space.
Behaviour and personality
Cruises and glides across the sand, burying itself partially at rest. Requires footprint rather than depth.
Before you buy
Please read before buying. This species has a very poor survival record in home aquaria - most specimens die within a year, commonly from starvation or injury. It also carries a venomous barb capable of a serious sting. It needs an extremely large, custom, low-rock system and an experienced keeper. Many retailers decline to stock it.
