Brittle Pink Starfish Ophiocoma Nereidina
The Brittle Pink Starfish, Ophiocoma nereidina, is a fairly common starfish found throughout the Caribbean and South Florida. Like other brittle stars, it is a nocturnal scavenger that spends most of the day hidden under rocks but ventures out at night to feed. The starfish has a small disc, typically around 0.5 inches in diameter, with long, slender arms that can reach up to 6 inches in length. Its coloration is a deep red or burgundy. The Brittle Pink Starfish is reef safe and will eat whatever detritus and small organisms fall to the bottom of the tank. It is generally peaceful and can be kept with other Caribbean starfish and brittle stars. However, it may prey on small, sick, or dying fish if underfed. This starfish is considered relatively easy to moderate in difficulty to care for. It requires a minimum tank size of 30 gallons and water parameters of a specific gravity between 1.022-1.026, pH of 8.0-8.4, and temperature of 75-82°F. Careful acclimation is important, as starfish are sensitive to rapid changes in water conditions. With proper care, the Brittle Pink Starfish can make an interesting and active addition to a reef aquarium.
