(Also known as Purple Bullseye Mushroom Coral, Hairy Mushroom Coral, or Elephant Ear Mushroom Coral)
OverviewThe Purple Bullseye Rock Mushroom (Rhodactis sp.) is a vibrant and hardy soft coral (Corallimorpharian) admired for its deep violet to metallic purple coloration and distinct bullseye patterning. Its fleshy, textured oral disc is covered in short, bubble-like vesicles that shimmer under blue or actinic lighting, creating a velvety appearance. The concentric rings and central mouth form the characteristic “bullseye” pattern, which can include highlights of blue, pink, or green depending on lighting and water chemistry. Durable, adaptable, and visually stunning, this coral is a popular choice for adding richness and contrast to shaded or low-flow areas of the reef aquarium.
OriginNative to the Indo-Pacific region, including the Great Barrier Reef, Coral Sea, Fiji, Tonga, Indonesia, and the Solomon Islands. Commonly found in protected reef slopes, lagoons, and shaded rock outcrops, where lighting is subdued and water flow gentle.
FeedingThe Purple Bullseye Mushroom Coral is photosynthetic, relying primarily on zooxanthellae within its tissue. It also benefits from supplemental feeding to maintain strong coloration and steady growth. Feed 1–2 times per week with:
- Finely chopped seafood (shrimp, clam, or fish)
- Mysis or enriched brine shrimp
- Marine snow or fine coral foods
Target feeding encourages fuller expansion and supports long-term health.
LightingLow to moderate lighting.Rhodactis prefers diffused or indirect light and may lose colour or contract under strong illumination.
- PAR range: 50–150 ¬µmol/m¬≤/s
- Ideal placement in shaded areas or on lower rockwork.
- Blue and actinic lighting enhances its deep purple and metallic highlights.
Low to moderate, indirect flow. Gentle, circulating water movement helps keep the coral clean and oxygenated while allowing full polyp expansion. Excessive flow can cause detachment or damage to the soft tissue.
Placement- Place on lower rockwork or the substrate, ideally in shaded or low-light areas.
- Provide ample space for growth — Rhodactis can expand significantly and spread by budding.
- Avoid proximity to aggressive stinging corals or high-flow zones.
- Excellent for shaded aquascape corners or transitional zones in mixed reefs.
Reef safe. Compatible with:
- Peaceful reef fish (gobies, blennies, wrasses, tangs, clownfish, etc.)
- Invertebrates such as shrimp, snails, and hermit crabs
- Other soft corals and non-aggressive LPS species
Avoid:
- Aggressive LPS corals (e.g., Euphyllia, Galaxea, Hydnophora) nearby
- Butterflyfish or large angelfish that may nip the coral’s soft tissue
Moderate.Rhodactis corals can release mild toxins and overgrow nearby species, competing for space. Maintain sufficient spacing from other corals to prevent encroachment.
Experience LevelBeginner. The Purple Bullseye Mushroom Coral is extremely hardy and forgiving, suitable for aquarists of all experience levels. Its tolerance for varied water conditions and lighting makes it ideal for both nano and large reef aquariums.
Water Parameters- Temperature: 24–27°C (75–81°F)
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Salinity: 1.024–1.026 SG
- Alkalinity (dKH): 8–12
- Calcium: 380–450 ppm
- Magnesium: 1250–1350 ppm
- Nitrate: <10 ppm (tolerant up to 15 ppm)
- Phosphate: <0.05 ppm
- Tank Size: Minimum 50 litres (13 gallons); suitable for nano reefs or larger systems
Consistent parameters and moderate nutrient levels help sustain its intense purple tones and soft texture.
Reef CompatibilityFully reef safe. The Purple Bullseye Rock Mushroom Coral is a versatile, low-maintenance coral ideal for adding colour depth and organic movement to shaded or low-light reef areas. Its hardiness and adaptability make it a reliable and beautiful addition to any mixed reef setup.
