Description

Candy Cane Hogfish (Bodianus sepiacaudus)
Overview

The Candy Cane Hogfish, also known as the Split-Tail Hogfish, is a stunning reef-safe species admired for its bold red-and-white striped body and distinctive split caudal fin. Its vibrant coloration and active swimming behavior make it a standout addition to any marine aquarium.

Origin

Native to the Indo-Pacific region, particularly around the Marshall Islands and Fiji, this species inhabits outer reef slopes and rubble zones at moderate depths, where it forages among rocks and corals.

Feeding

The Candy Cane Hogfish is a carnivorous species that thrives on a diet rich in meaty foods. Offer a variety of high-quality frozen or fresh items such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and enriched marine preparations. Regular feeding helps maintain its bright coloration and energy.

Tank Mates

Generally peaceful, the Candy Cane Hogfish mixes well with most semi-aggressive or larger community fish. It may prey on very small shrimp or ornamental crustaceans, so choose invertebrate companions carefully. Ideal tank mates include tangs, wrasses, angelfish, and larger gobies.

Aggression

This species is typically mild-mannered but may become territorial towards other hogfish or similar-shaped species. Provide plenty of rockwork and open swimming space to reduce territorial behavior.

Experience Level

Suitable for intermediate marine hobbyists, the Candy Cane Hogfish is hardy and adapts well to aquarium life when provided with stable water conditions and a balanced diet.
