Overview:
The Caribbean Reef Butterfly Fish is a graceful species featuring a silvery body with bold vertical black bars and a distinctive eyespot near the dorsal fin. Active and elegant, it is a classic marine display fish that brings beauty and movement to larger aquariums.
Origin:
Native to the Western Atlantic and Caribbean, from Florida and the Bahamas down to Brazil.
Feeding:
In the wild, this species feeds on coral polyps, small invertebrates, and algae. In captivity, it accepts frozen mysis, enriched brine shrimp, finely chopped seafood, and marine-based pellets, though some individuals may be finicky eaters at first.
Tank Mates:
Best housed with peaceful community fish. Works well in fish-only aquariums but is not recommended for reef tanks due to its coral-feeding habits.
Aggression:
Peaceful, though can show mild territorial behavior toward other butterflyfish.
Experience Level:
Intermediate to advanced – requires a mature, stable aquarium and careful feeding.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 72–78°F (22–26°C)
- pH: 8.1–8.4
- Salinity: 1.020–1.025
