Care guide at a glance
Pseudodax moluccanus
Description
A robust wrasse named for its prominent chisel-shaped incisors, striking as a juvenile and considerably plainer as an adult.
Feeding
Carnivorous. Frozen mysis, chopped prawn, clam and mussel. The chisel-like front teeth are used to scrape encrusting invertebrates from rock.
Compatibility
Not reef safe with invertebrates - will take ornamental shrimp, snails and small crabs, and may scrape at corals. Peaceful toward fish.
Behaviour and personality
Active and constantly working rock surfaces. Juveniles are dark with bright blue and yellow stripes; adults are far plainer.
Before you buy
The juvenile colouring, which is what sells the fish, fades substantially with maturity. It also reaches 25 cm and will damage invertebrates.
