Description
Overview:
The Balloon Convict Cichlid is a unique, selectively bred variant of the classic Convict Cichlid, recognized for its short, rounded body shape and bold black vertical stripes over a silvery or bluish background. Despite its compact size and comical appearance, this fish retains the hardiness, intelligence, and lively behavior that makes convict cichlids popular among aquarists.
Origin:
The balloon morph was developed through selective breeding from wild-type Cichlasoma nigrofasciatum, which is native to Central America—particularly rivers in Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador.
Feeding:
Omnivorous and very easy to feed. Offer a varied diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, flake foods, frozen bloodworms, brine shrimp, and occasional vegetable matter like blanched spinach or spirulina flakes.
Tank Mates:
Semi-aggressive and territorial, especially during breeding. Best kept with other robust Central American cichlids, larger tetras, catfish like Plecos or Synodontis, or in a species-only setup. Avoid slow or delicate fish.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 74–80°F (23–27°C)
- pH: 6.5–8.0
- Hardness: Moderate to hard
- Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons for a single pair
Behavior & Breeding:
- Very prolific breeders – one of the easiest cichlids to spawn in captivity
- Both parents are fiercely protective of their eggs and fry
- Can become aggressive during breeding – plan tank mates and layout accordingly
Special Notes:
- Balloon body shape is purely cosmetic—does not affect health if well cared for
- Provide plenty of rocks, caves, and hiding places to reduce territorial aggression
- Hardy and excellent for intermediate hobbyists or those wanting to try breeding cichlids
The Balloon Convict Cichlid combines the bold personality of a classic cichlid with a unique, eye-catching body shape. It's perfect for aquarists looking for a compact yet energetic and engaging fish with strong parental instincts and a lot of personality.
