Plectorhinchus chaetodonoides
Description
A juvenile patterned in brown with large white blotches, swimming with an extraordinary undulating wobble. Charming as a youngster, and enormous as an adult.
Feeding
Carnivorous and often reluctant to feed on arrival. Live and frozen mysis, blackworm, chopped prawn and clam, several times daily until established. Many juveniles are lost to starvation.
Compatibility
Peaceful but will eat shrimp and small fish as it grows. Not reef safe with invertebrates. Needs very large, calm tankmates.
Behaviour and personality
Juveniles swim with a distinctive wobbling motion thought to mimic a toxic flatworm. Adults are grey with dense dark spotting and lose the wobble entirely.
Before you buy
Two serious issues: it reaches 60 cm or more, and juveniles frequently refuse to feed. The appealing spotted wobbling fish becomes a very large plain grey adult. Not suitable for a home aquarium in the long term.
