Overview:
The Convict Tang is a small, striking marine herbivore, easily recognized by its silver-white body marked with bold vertical black stripes. Its peaceful nature, active swimming, and algae-grazing behavior make it a popular choice for reef aquariums.
Origin:
Native to the Indo-Pacific, commonly found on coral reefs, lagoons, and shallow coastal areas from East Africa to the central Pacific.
Feeding:
Primarily herbivorous – thrives on marine algae, seaweed, and spirulina-based foods, supplemented with high-quality herbivore pellets or flakes to maintain vibrant coloration and digestive health.
Tank Tmates:
Ideal for peaceful community tanks. Can be kept with other tangs if the aquarium is large enough to reduce territorial behavior.
Aggression:
Mildly territorial – may defend grazing areas but generally peaceful with non-aggressive species.
Experience Level:
Beginner to intermediate aquarists – suitable for those maintaining a stable reef aquarium with ample swimming space and a steady supply of algae-based foods.
