Care guide at a glance
Boraras maculatus
Description
A tiny, deep red-orange nano fish marked with bold black spots on the flank and tail base. One of the smallest fish in the hobby and a superb choice for a planted nano tank.
Feeding
Very small foods only. Powdered flake, frozen cyclops and baby brine shrimp. Will not take standard flake.
Compatibility
Far too small for a general community. Best in a species tank or with shrimp and other nano fish. Keep in groups of ten or more.
Behaviour and personality
Loosely shoaling and shy in open water, becoming confident and well coloured in a densely planted tank.
Before you buy
Soft acidic water with tannins brings out the deep red. Still widely sold as Rasbora maculata, though the species moved to Boraras some years ago.
