Emerald Mithrax Crab Mithraculus Sculptus
The Emerald Mithrax Crab, scientifically known as Mithraculus sculptus, is a small, heavily-armored green crab native to the reefs of the Caribbean. This nocturnal crab has a distinct, flat shiny green body and hairy legs that easily identify it. In the home aquarium, the Emerald Crab requires a well-established tank with plenty of rockwork and hiding places. The Emerald Crab is primarily herbivorous, preferring a diet of various types of algae, including bubble algae. Many aquarists supplement its diet with dried seaweed, chopped meaty foods like shrimp, and quality pellet fish food. When well-fed, the Emerald Crab is generally very tolerant of its tankmates and highly compatible in reef environments. Like other invertebrates, the Emerald Crab does not tolerate copper-based medications or fluctuating water parameters. It is considered a hardy and easy-to-care-for crab, making it suitable for most aquarium hobbyists. The recommended water parameters for optimal Emerald Crab care include a temperature of 76°F and a well-established aquarium with a minimum volume of 13 gallons.
