Description

Geophagus Brasiliensis 4cm

Overview:
The Geophagus Brasiliensis, commonly known as the Pearl Cichlid or Brazilian Eartheater, is a fascinating and beautiful freshwater fish that makes a striking addition to any aquarium. With their shimmering colors, especially prominent in males, and unique behavior of sifting through the substrate for food, they provide an engaging spectacle. They can grow up to 10 inches in length, displaying a broad spectrum of colors from greens and blues to vibrant reds and oranges.

Origin:
Native to the warm waters of Southeast Brazil, this species thrives in a variety of freshwater habitats, including rivers, lakes, and flooded areas. Their adaptability to different environmental conditions makes them relatively easy to care for in home aquariums.

Feeding:
Geophagus Brasiliensis are omnivorous, with a diet in the wild consisting of worms, small insects, crustaceans, and plant matter. In the aquarium, they will readily accept a wide range of foods including pellets, flakes, frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp and bloodworms. Ensure a balanced diet to keep them healthy and enhance their colors.

Tank Mates:
These cichlids do well with a variety of tank mates. They are generally peaceful but can become territorial, especially during breeding. Suitable companions include larger tetras, peaceful South American cichlids, and other bottom dwellers like catfish. Avoid very small or overly aggressive fish.

Aggression:
While not aggressive by nature, they can show territorial behavior, especially males during breeding season. Providing ample space and hiding spots can minimize aggression.

Experience Level:
Suitable for intermediate aquarists. Their need for specific water conditions and potential size demands a certain level of aquarium management experience.

Water Parameters:
  • Temperature: 72°F - 82°F (22°C - 28°C)
  • pH: 6.0 - 7.5
  • Hardness: 5-15 dGH
A well-maintained aquarium with plenty of space, a sandy substrate for sifting, and areas of dense vegetation will mimic their natural habitat and help these fascinating fish thrive. Regular water changes and monitoring of water conditions are essential to maintain their health.
