Care guide at a glance
Premnas biaculeatus
Description
A deep maroon clownfish banded in bright gold rather than white, the gold intensifying with age. The largest and most assertive of the clownfish.
Feeding
Marine pellets, flake and frozen mysis and brine shrimp. A vigorous feeder.
Compatibility
Reef safe but considerably more aggressive than ocellaris or percula clowns, particularly mature females. Keep singly or as a bonded pair with robust tankmates.
Behaviour and personality
Bold and strongly territorial. Females grow much larger than males and will defend a host against your hand during maintenance.
Before you buy
Maroon clowns are genuinely territorial and will bite during tank maintenance. They also grow considerably larger than common clownfish, so allow more space. The gold banding deepens over the first two years.
