Acanthurus japonicus
Description
A dark-bodied surgeonfish edged in bright yellow along the dorsal and anal fins with a white cheek patch. One of the more attractive and manageable Acanthurus tangs.
Feeding
Primarily herbivorous. Dried marine algae daily, spirulina foods and some frozen meaty food.
Compatibility
Reef safe but territorial toward other tangs, particularly other Acanthurus. Generally one tang per tank unless it is very large.
Behaviour and personality
Constantly grazing and constantly moving. Bold once settled and quick to challenge new arrivals of similar shape.
Before you buy
Prone to marine ich when stressed or newly imported, so quarantine before introduction. Needs swimming length and daily algae. Frequently confused with the very similar Acanthurus nigricans.
