Description
Overview:
The Guyana Red Dragon Angelfish is a striking selectively bred variant of the freshwater angelfish, known for its intense red-orange spotted body coloration contrasted with iridescent highlights and elegant, flowing fins. Its unique color morph is highly sought after by angelfish enthusiasts and makes a stunning centerpiece in a well-planted aquarium.
Origin:
The wild-type Pterophyllum scalare originates from slow-moving rivers and floodplains across South America, including the Amazon Basin. The Red Dragon morph is a captive-bred variety, with the “Guyana” name referring to its breeding lineage or coloration influence.
Feeding:
Omnivorous. Thrives on high-quality flakes or pellets supplemented with frozen or live foods such as brine shrimp, bloodworms, and daphnia. A varied diet will help maintain vibrant coloration.
Tank Mates:
Generally peaceful but can be mildly territorial, especially when breeding. Best kept with medium-sized, calm community fish such as Corydoras, peaceful tetras (avoid fin-nippers), rainbowfish, and dwarf cichlids. Avoid keeping with very small fish that may be seen as prey.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 76–82°F (24–28°C)
- pH: 6.0–7.5
- Soft to moderately hard water
- Minimum Tank Size: 30 gallons for a pair; larger for groups
- Prefers planted aquariums with vertical space for swimming
Behavior & Personality:
- Graceful, slow-moving swimmer
- Can form monogamous pairs and exhibit strong parental care when breeding
- Displays best coloration in well-maintained tanks with stable water conditions
Special Notes:
- Best kept in small groups to reduce aggression, or as a mated pair
- Long fins may be targeted by fin-nippers—choose tank mates carefully
- Will spawn on vertical surfaces such as broad plant leaves or slate
- A standout variety for aquarists seeking a bold splash of red in their angelfish collection
The Guyana Red Dragon Angelfish combines the elegance of classic angelfish with brilliant, spotted coloration, making it a showpiece in any peaceful community aquarium.
