Care guide at a glance
Choerodon fasciatus
Description
One of the most striking wrasses in the hobby: broad orange bars edged in electric blue, and a set of prominent blue teeth it makes no attempt to hide. Australian specimens carry markedly deeper colour.
Feeding
A determined carnivore. Mysis, chopped shrimp, clam, mussel and quality frozen preparations. Variety matters for maintaining colour.
Compatibility
Not reef safe in the usual sense - ornamental shrimp, small crabs and snails will be eaten. Corals are left alone. Best with robust tankmates of similar size; can be territorial toward other wrasses.
Behaviour and personality
Typically shy on arrival and may hide for several days before settling. Once established, bold, inquisitive and constantly on the move.
Before you buy
The Australian variety commands a premium over the Indo-Pacific form for good reason - the colour difference is substantial and permanent. A secure lid is advisable, as they will jump when spooked.
