Care guide at a glance
Ostracion meleagris
Description
A small boxfish, males patterned in blue with orange spots and females black with white dots. Charming, slow-moving and carrying the same toxin risk as all boxfish.
Feeding
Omnivorous. Frozen mysis, clam, chopped prawn, marine pellets and dried algae, two or three times daily.
Compatibility
Peaceful and slow. Not reef safe with small invertebrates. Must not be kept with aggressive or nippy fish, which will stress it.
Behaviour and personality
Hovers and manoeuvres slowly on small rapidly beating fins. Inquisitive and unafraid.
Before you buy
Like all boxfish, when severely stressed or dying it can release a toxin capable of killing every other fish in the aquarium. It needs a calm, large, well-filtered system and careful handling during transport and acclimation.
