Care guide at a glance
Betta splendens
Description
A short-finned plakat in deep red with darker marbling. Compact, muscular and hardier than long-finned forms.
Feeding
A carnivore. Quality betta pellets as a staple, with frozen bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp. Prone to overfeeding, so keep portions small.
Compatibility
Must not be housed with another betta of any sex outside controlled breeding. Avoid fin-nippers such as tiger barbs, and avoid other long-finned fish. Small peaceful shoalers and snails generally work well.
Behaviour and personality
Genuinely interactive and quick to recognise its keeper. Breathes atmospheric air via the labyrinth organ, so unobstructed surface access is essential.
Before you buy
A well-fitted lid is not optional; bettas jump. As a numbered individual specimen, the fish pictured is the fish supplied - once sold it cannot be repeated.
