Juvenile Black Tip Reef Shark Carcharhinus Melanopterus
The Blacktip Reef Shark (Carcharhinus melanopterus) is a medium-sized coastal shark found in tropical waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. It is a robust shark with a short, rounded snout and distinctive black tips on its fins. Blacktip Reef Sharks typically grow up to 180 cm in length and are born in groups of around 4 pups. They inhabit shallow coral reefs, reef flats, and sandy bays adjacent to reefs, and occasionally venture offshore over deep water. These sharks are carnivorous, feeding primarily on bony fishes, crustaceans, and small sharks and rays. They are considered relatively non-aggressive, but may become more territorial and defensive when in their home reef areas. Blacktip Reef Sharks are not recommended for most home aquariums due to their large adult size and need for spacious environments. They require a minimum tank size of at least 1,000 gallons and are best suited for public aquariums and specialized facilities. The water must be maintained at tropical temperatures between 75-82°F, with a pH of 8.1-8.4 and high oxygen levels. Overall, the Blacktip Reef Shark is an iconic species of coral reef ecosystems, but its care requirements make it unsuitable for most hobbyist aquariums. Proper planning and specialized facilities are necessary for its successful long-term captive care.
