The Lake Mbuta Gudgeon is a robust, bottom-dwelling freshwater fish, known for its attractive mottled pattern and calm temperament. It is an interesting addition to community tanks or biotope setups, providing activity near the substrate and a naturalistic look.

Endemic to Lake Mbuta in Papua New Guinea. Inhabits slow-moving waters, shallow edges, and areas with sandy or muddy substrates and submerged vegetation.

Carnivorous and opportunistic. Accepts sinking pellets, frozen foods (bloodworms, brine shrimp, mysis), and small live foods. A varied, protein-rich diet supports health and coloration.

Peaceful toward similarly sized species. Compatible with rainbowfish, small cichlids, and other community fish of non-aggressive temperament. Avoid very small fish that could be eaten.

Low. May establish small territories on the substrate but generally non-aggressive if space and hiding spots are available.

Intermediate. Benefits from stable water conditions and a mature, well-structured aquarium.
