Care guide at a glance
Acanthurus tennenti
Description
A grey-brown surgeonfish marked with two dark chevrons behind the gill and a pale blue-edged tail. Understated and less commonly offered than the Acanthurus staples.
Feeding
Primarily herbivorous. Dried marine algae daily, spirulina foods and some frozen meaty food.
Compatibility
Reef safe but territorial toward other tangs. One per tank in most systems.
Behaviour and personality
Cruises and grazes steadily. Named for the dark chevron markings behind the gill, said to resemble a lieutenant's stripes.
Before you buy
Quarantine before introduction, as tangs are prone to marine ich. Daily access to algae is essential for colour and long-term health.
