Care guide at a glance
Amphiprion biaculeatus
Description
A maroon clownfish carrying the branching, jagged white lightning pattern that made this line famous. Larger, deeper red and considerably more assertive than the common clownfish.
Feeding
Marine pellets, flake and frozen mysis and brine shrimp. A vigorous feeder.
Compatibility
Reef safe but considerably more aggressive than ocellaris or percula clowns, particularly mature females. Keep singly or as a bonded pair, and choose tankmates that can hold their own.
Behaviour and personality
Bold and territorial. Females grow much larger than males and will defend a host aggressively, including against your hand.
Before you buy
Maroon clowns are the largest and most aggressive of the clownfish. A mature female is genuinely territorial and will bite during tank maintenance. The lightning pattern develops and spreads over the first two years.
