Care guide at a glance
Heniochus acuminatus
Description
A tall black-and-white banded butterflyfish trailing an extremely long white dorsal filament. Elegant and hardy, and frequently confused with the reef-safe schooling bannerfish.
Feeding
Omnivorous and adaptable for a butterflyfish. Frozen mysis, clam, chopped prawn and marine pellets, two or three times daily.
Compatibility
Peaceful toward fish and often kept as a pair. Not reef safe - it eats soft corals, polyps, anemones and tubeworms.
Behaviour and personality
Cruises steadily around the tank, picking at rockwork. Settles readily and is one of the easier butterflyfish to feed.
Before you buy
Frequently confused with Heniochus diphreutes, which looks near-identical but is reef safe and shoals. This species is neither - it will strip a reef, and it does not need to be kept in a group. Check the scientific name when buying.
