Care guide at a glance
Oxycirrhites typus
Description
A hawkfish patterned in a red-and-white crosshatch with a long tapering snout, perching motionless among branching coral. Distinctive, hardy and full of character.
Feeding
Carnivorous. Frozen mysis, chopped prawn, clam and marine pellets. Uses the long snout to pick prey from crevices.
Compatibility
Reef safe with corals but will eat ornamental shrimp, small crabs and very small fish. Peaceful toward fish too large to swallow, though territorial with other hawkfish.
Behaviour and personality
Perches on gorgonians, branching coral and rockwork propped on thickened pectoral fins, then darts to take prey. Lacks a swim bladder, so it rests rather than hovers.
Before you buy
Needs branching coral, gorgonian or rockwork to perch on - in a bare tank it never settles properly. It will clear a tank of ornamental shrimp, and it jumps, so a sealed lid is advisable.
