Melanotaenia praecox
Description
A compact rainbowfish with an iridescent blue body and red-orange fins, the colour shifting constantly as it moves. Far more manageable than the larger rainbowfish species.
Feeding
Flake, micro-pellets and frozen daphnia, bloodworm and brine shrimp. Feeds mainly in the upper half of the tank.
Compatibility
Peaceful and active. Keep in groups of six or more with a mix of sexes. Good with barbs, larger tetras and other rainbowfish.
Behaviour and personality
Fast and constantly moving. Males colour up hard when displaying and chase one another without doing damage.
Before you buy
Colour takes several months to develop, so juveniles in a shop tank look far duller than the adult fish. Needs open swimming space and a lid.
