Odonus niger
Description
A deep blue-green triggerfish with a graceful swimming motion and, in mature fish, bright red teeth. The most peaceful of the commonly traded triggers.
Feeding
Largely planktivorous, unusually for a trigger. Frozen mysis, chopped prawn, clam and marine pellets, once or twice daily.
Compatibility
One of the few triggers that can be called reef safe with caution - it generally leaves corals alone but will take ornamental shrimp. Peaceful for a trigger, though territorial with age.
Behaviour and personality
Swims in open water using its dorsal and anal fins in a rippling motion, rather than perching. Develops long trailing tail lobes and red teeth with maturity.
Before you buy
Grows to 40 cm or more and needs a very large tank with open swimming room. Far better behaved than most triggers, but still not a fish for a small system.
