Description
Overview:
The Onze Cichlid, or Mylochromis lateristriga, is a graceful and striking haplochromine cichlid from Lake Malawi. Known for its elongated body, subtle horizontal stripe, and in males, a golden-tipped face and electric blue sheen, this species brings an elegant and less aggressive dynamic to Malawi setups. A peaceful predator by nature, it’s a great choice for aquarists looking to add color, size, and unique behavior to a large African cichlid tank.
Origin:
Endemic to Lake Malawi, primarily found along sandy-bottomed regions with scattered rocks where it hunts invertebrates and small prey in the substrate.
Feeding:
Carnivorous. Feed a diet of high-quality cichlid pellets, supplemented with frozen foods like brine shrimp, mysis, krill, and occasional protein treats. Avoid excessive high-fat or mammal-based foods.
Tank Mates:
Relatively peaceful for a hap and best kept with other non-aggressive Lake Malawi haps or peacocks. Avoid Mbuna or highly aggressive tank mates. Can be housed in male-only tanks or 1 male with several females in larger tanks.
Water Parameters:
- Temperature: 76–82°F (24–28°C)
- pH: 7.8–8.6
- Hardness: 10–20 dGH
- Minimum Tank Size: 75 gallons (larger for groups or mixed hap setups)
- Provide ample swimming space, open sandy areas, and rocky hiding spots
Behavior & Personality:
- Active, bottom-oriented forager
- Males display vivid coloration when mature or dominant
- Generally non-aggressive unless breeding or threatened
Special Notes:
- Can reach up to 9–10 inches (23–25 cm) in captivity
- Benefits from high oxygenation and strong filtration
- Best colors seen with a clean diet, stable water, and ample space
- Still relatively uncommon in the hobby, making it a standout for collectors
The Onze Cichlid (Mylochromis lateristriga) is an elegant, moderately sized Malawi hap that combines beauty, peaceful temperament, and fascinating behavior—ideal for aquarists looking to go beyond the usual peacocks and Mbuna with a more refined Lake Malawi species.
