Etroplus maculatus
Description
A small golden-orange cichlid from Indian and Sri Lankan estuaries, marked with a dark flank spot and fine red speckling. Peaceful by cichlid standards and tolerant of brackish water.
Feeding
Omnivorous. Flake, pellets, frozen foods and vegetable matter.
Compatibility
Peaceful for a cichlid, though pairs become territorial when spawning. Keep in a group and let pairs form. Good with other hard-water and brackish-tolerant species.
Behaviour and personality
Busy and inquisitive, working the substrate. Pairs are attentive parents.
Before you buy
Tolerates fresh water but does noticeably better with a little salt, and is often kept in low-end brackish setups. Prefers hard alkaline water either way.
