Microctenopoma ansorgii
Description
A small African labyrinth fish banded in orange and dark blue, the colour intensifying dramatically when males display. Shy, unusual and quite unlike the Asian gouramis.
Feeding
Prefers meaty foods. Frozen bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp. Often refuses dry flake entirely.
Compatibility
Peaceful but timid and easily outcompeted. Best in a species tank or with small calm fish. Will eat anything very small.
Behaviour and personality
Moves slowly and deliberately through cover rather than swimming in the open. Breathes atmospheric air at the surface. Males colour up hard when displaying.
Before you buy
Needs dense planting, dim light and soft acidic water to feel secure. In a bright open tank with boisterous tankmates it will hide permanently and starve.
