Care guide at a glance
Pseudanthias tuka
Description
An anthias in intense violet-magenta, the males carrying a yellow dorsal flash. Among the most beautiful reef fish, and among the hardest to keep alive.
Feeding
A highly specialised planktivore. Needs live copepods, live baby brine shrimp and enriched frozen foods, four or more times daily. Many specimens refuse prepared food entirely and starve.
Compatibility
Reef safe and peaceful. Keep as one male with several females. Cannot compete with faster feeders.
Behaviour and personality
Hovers in open water feeding continuously. Extremely shy on arrival.
Before you buy
This species has a notably poor survival record even among anthias. It needs live food, a mature system with a productive refugium, and feeding several times a day. Most specimens are lost within months.
